DevHunters Forum: A Solid Time Sink

September 7th, 2007 · No Comments

I found a webmaster forum to hang out at called DevHunters, and like all things Internet it is turning out to be a soild time sink. What’s it with me and websites, I wonder. Sometimes I just get stuck on something and stay stuck for a while. First it was browsing flickr, then it was the wordpress forums, and then it was the Sims, now it is DevHunters. DevHunters has a website advertising forum in it that hasn’t quite got to the critical number of posts where you know that a forum is getting stale. I used to visit WebMasterWorld quite often, but this was way back - nowadays I don’t even bother - the old members has an entrenched, proud outlook on things and folks like me don’t seem too welcome. DevHunters is relatively new, and so this is the time to get your toe in, if you know what I mean. Young forums are a lot of fun - you have the chronic forum addict users, those that come for the seo tools, and a lot of early adopters. DevHunters has some serious stuff going on in the other forums, but for me, the best place to be is the general chat forum. The threads go from the ludicrous (”do you like rain”) to confessions of PC and Internet addicts like your’s truly. I should really get a grip on my time, and stop wasting it like there is no tomorrow. Oh, well, someday, maybe.

A Smack to the Head Will Fix Your Craving

March 20th, 2007 · No Comments

Now I see the truth behind my father’s saying that all I need to stop smoking is a strategically placed smack to the head!

Scientists studying stroke patients are reporting that an injury to a specific part of the brain, near the ear, can instantly and permanently break a smoking habit, effectively erasing the most stubborn of addictions. People with the injury who stopped smoking found that their bodies, as one man put it, “forgot the urge to smoke.”

Scientists Tie Part of Brain to Urge to Smoke - New York Times

The portion of the brain they are currently investigating is called the “insula”. It appears that in all the subjects, the drive to eat food, or other essential activities remains the same. This was not a controlled experiment where they actually injured people in the head, but rather a followup study that was investigating the after effects of head injuries.

Lip Balm Anonymous: Are You Addicted?

February 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Lip Balm Anonymous

What do the experts say? By the definition, we are addicted. We use (or used) the substance habitually, often not realizing we were actually applying it since it was such a daily routine. Anyone who has tried to quit can readily attest that when you stop using, your lips become negatively affected for several days or weeks. The physiological dependency is there!

I have always been suspicious of that stick of lip balm my girlfriend carries. I used to tell her she was addicted. Little did I know how close to the truth I was!!!

LBA has been on the web for more than 10 years now. Wierd?, or scary? or both?
